Call for Proposals Midi Orchestrator/Arranger for Operetta "Did I Just Say That?"

Visceral Visions and re:Naissance Opera are co-producing an animated short film adaptation  of a new operetta called “Did I Just Say That?”. We are excited to be distributing a call for proposals for a Midi Orchestrator/Arranger who can take the 20-minute composition to the next step as the score for our film.

Who We Are
Visceral Visions is an interdisciplinary arts company that has been producing the work of and centering the voices of BIPOC artists. We have several pieces in development ranging from opera, to theatre, to experimental media arts.

re:Naissance Opera is a company that challenges what opera is and what it means. As a highly innovative and experimental company, re:Naissance does not shy away from bold, boundary pushing, difficult, or risky work.

These two companies bring to this project a spirit of innovation, experimentation, and exploration.

The Work

Composer Katerina Gimon and Librettist Valerie Sing Turner have created a beautiful comedic operetta for two singers (soprano and mezzo soprano), with a hard-hitting dramatic arc and a “diva-off” that incorporates musical quotes from some of the opera canon’s greatest hits (Carmen, Aida, Butterfly, Turandot, Lakme). Although the stage version was orchestrated for a chamber orchestra of 14 instruments, we are looking for a midi orchestrator/arranger who can create a score for full orchestra that will better serve the aural expectations of a filmgoing audience, while retaining any unusual instruments specified by the composer, such as a bowed vibraphone We have rehearsal and studio recordings of the work, a piano score, and the stage-version orchestrated score, as well as extensive notes and feedback. As such, the successful orchestrator/arranger for this project can immediately begin work.

Who You Are

We are looking for someone who can bring strong orchestration and arranging skills to the table to see the piece take shape and form as a fully realized orchestral piece that is full, rich, and prioritizes enriching the story.

You have experience working in areas of:

  • Orchestration
  • Midi arranging
  • Film scoring

You will be comfortable with providing final mixes and stems to the Producer, Anju Singh.

If possible, you would have at least 5 professional, orchestral film scores completed to date.

You will have strong project management skills and are self-directed. We expect that deadlines and timelines will be met and respected.

We strongly encourage individuals from underrepresented groups to apply as we’d love to see your proposal.

How We Will Work

We will work collaboratively with you with our creative team of:

  • Film Co-Directors Debi Wong and Valerie Sing Turner
  • Producer Anju Singh
  • Composer Katerina Gimon

This team will help achieve the vision for the work.

Expected Delivery Date (potential to negotiate): September 30, 2024
